The Shawmut Peninsula, valued for its freshwater spring, was surrounded by the Massachusetts Bay and Charles River and therefore an excellent harbor. It was first called Trimountaine but later renamed to Boston after Boston, Lincolnshire, England, from which several prominent colonists came. In 1629 John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony initiated the Cambridge Agreement, a key founding document of the city and Boston was founded in 1630 on the Shawmut Peninsula by Puritan colonists from England.
